Immigration Services and Legal Advocacy (ISLA) is a legal services organization that defends the rights of our immigrant communities. ISLA advocates for just and humane immigration policy. ISLA visits detained immigrants to provide pro bono representation under a universal representation model and provides legal representation to unaccompanied minors and their families in the New Orleans area.
Students will participate in our Court Watch Project. in which they will observe immigration court proceedings involving people detained by ICE in Louisiana and take notes on their observations. This information helps ISLA identify systemic issues and potential opportunities for advocacy or litigation.
Students volunteering with ILSA will gain firsthand insight into the Immigration Court and Detention systems and the challenges face by immigrants in detention. Students will learn about due process, access to legal representation issues, language access, and the impact of detention on the individuals and their families.
