Recirculating Farms is a 501c3 non-profit collaboration of farmers, educators, and activists committed to building an equitable food system from farm to fork. We run ecologically and socially responsible programs that grow local, affordable food through innovative, eco-efficient methods, based on historic practices. Through training, outreach and advocacy, we advance sustainable farming and combat food insecurity, in diverse communities, to foster physical, mental, and financial wellness.

What you do

We hope to have service-learning students help us further beautify our space and increase the yields of our beds at our Growing Local NOLA community garden. Since breaking ground in 2020, we have spent the past three years amending our soil, building up our infrastructure, installing electricity and water, and beautifying our space. Service learning students will help us maintain our garden beds, compost piles, and help to keep our space clean and tidy.

What you learn

Recirculating Farms offers an experiential opportunity to understand the intersections between ecology, urban agriculture, environmental stewardship, and social justice.  Practicing organic, permaculture, and regenerative agriculture means recognizing that our farm is part of a larger ecosystem; and while these practices may be seen as “novel” or “innovative”, they are in fact historical practices that have been practiced by indigenous communities for centuries. These growing practices work with our natural cycles to promote environmental sustainability and produce healthy food. Our food and our space in turn supports the neighborhood and community around our garden. The Central City neighborhood has experienced decades of institutional disinvestment resulting in, among other things, a lack of access to healthy, culturally relevant produce.
