Fewer than 2% of teen mothers earn a college degree before age 30, and more than half of all parenting college students leave school without a degree. Generation Hope is committed to changing these statistics one family and one system at a time. Our mission is to ensure all student parents have the opportunities to succeed, experience economic mobility, and build wealth. Generation Hope engages education and policy partners to drive systemic change and provides direct support to teen parents in college as well as their children through holistic, two-generation programming. Our Scholar program surrounds teen parents with mentoring, tuition assistance, a peer community, and other vital, wrap-around services. Currently, our New Orleans program serves 25 Scholars and their families.
Service learning students will serve as childcare volunteers. They play an essential role in ensuring our Scholars can fully engage and learn during Generation Hope programming. Volunteers provide a safe, fun, and supportive environment for Scholars’ children through activities, games, and supervision during our events. This opportunity is perfect for those who enjoy working with kids and want to make a meaningful impact in helping young parents achieve their educational goals.
Students will have the opportunity to practice strategies for engaging with children ages 0–8 through age-appropriate activities and positive behavior support. They will also gain insight into the experiences of student parents and the importance of creating supportive environments that allow parents to pursue their educational goals.
