Nurturing Roots Parent Academy (NRPA) is a New Orleans–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to strengthening family–school partnerships, improving literacy and academic outcomes, and dismantling the School-to-Prison Pipeline. We are a solution-based, community-rooted organization that empowers parents, students, and educators to disrupt systemic inequities through advocacy, tutoring, workshops, and leadership development.

What you do

As a service learning student with Nurturing Roots Parent Academy (NRPA), you will serve as a tutor and mentor for middle and high school students. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Tutoring Support: Provide academic assistance in reading, writing, math, or science, helping students strengthen skills, complete homework, and prepare for assessments.
  • Mentorship: Serve as a positive role model by encouraging student growth, resilience, and confidence in learning.  
  • Equity-Centered Engagement: Apply culturally responsive practices and uphold NRPA’s mission to disrupt educational inequities and support families.  
  • Collaboration: Work alongside NRPA staff and volunteers to ensure students receive individualized academic and personal support.
  • Communication: Share student progress or concerns with NRPA supervisors, ensuring students’ needs are addressed quickly and appropriately.  
  • Consistency: Commit to attending scheduled in-person or virtual tutoring sessions throughout the semester, maintaining reliability for students and families.

By serving with Nurturing Roots Parent Academy (NRPA), students gain:  Tutoring & Teaching Skills – Experience supporting middle and high school students in core subjects while building strategies for effective, student-centered learning.  Leadership & Communication – Practice leading small-group or one-on-one sessions, giving clear instructions, and adapting to different learning styles.  Cultural Competence – Develop awareness of how systemic inequities affect education, and learn how to apply culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches in real time.  Collaboration – Work alongside educators, parents, and peers to strengthen family–school partnerships and build a supportive learning environment. Advocacy & Equity Awareness – Understand the impact of the School-to-Prison Pipeline and how community-based solutions can reduce barriers to success for students of color. Professional Growth – Gain service-learning hours while building skills in responsibility, reliability, and reflective practice—skills transferable to any career field.
