Founded in 2021, Home Is Here is a growth-stage grassroots nonprofit organization that cultivates systems of support with and for newly arriving immigrants in the Gulf South. We believe democratizing resources is a part of the movement for immigrant justice and abolition. We believe in a culture of partnership, collective liberation, and belonging where everyone has a valued place and power. Home is Here builds alternative community infrastructure with immigrants who arrive without family or community support and are criminalized, incarcerated, and excluded from government-funded systems. Our work focuses on organizing around the areas that newly arriving immigrants say they value most: Legal Aid; Housing and Relationships.

What you do

Goal of this position is to assist Home is Here NOLA and partners to increase their capacity in supporting efforts to engage newly arriving immigrant community members in understanding systems, their new surroundings and their role in their integration process. Cultural Orientation is essential for newly arrived asylum seekers, providing crucial information on cultural topics that impact their ability to become self-sufficient in the U.S. The Coordinator’s role would be to schedule group orientation sessions and disseminate information on relevant social norms and self-sufficiency-based topics. The orientations could be conducted with a ‘Training of Trainers’ (TOT) model or directly with newly arrived community members in their primary language(s) with the assistance of trained interpreters. Orientations cover topics such as U.S. laws, public benefits, budgeting and personal finance, and outlines the role of Home is Here NOLA in the client’s resettlement period.
