STAIR logo

is a nonprofit organization that provides free, one-on-one reading tutoring to second and third grade students enrolled in New Orleans area public schools. STAIR's mission is to improve the reading skills and self-esteem of elementary school students. STAIR has been active in the New Orleans area for over 35 years.

What you do

Loyola service learning students are trained as reading tutors and assigned to work one-on-one with a STAIR student. Service learning students will work with the same child throughout the semester-long program. STAIR is offering both virtual and in-person tutoring for the Spring 2024 semester. 

What you learn

Service Learning students will learn about the New Orleans public school system, core literacy skills for early elementary students,  and the emotional and intellectual development of younger elementary school children.

Preservice Requirements

All service learning students must pass a background check, attend the training sessions, and successfully pass the tutor training quiz. Virtual tutors will need to have access to the internet and a desktop computer, laptop, iPad, or tablet with a camera for the virtual sessions and must be able to pick up materials February 1 or February 3.  Tutor Applications are due Tuesday, January 23, 2024
