The mission of Poydras Home is to enrich the lives of seniors and their families through personalized care and innovative programming in an intimate, compassionate community. Poydras Home has partnered with The Green House Project to create the 1st Green House homes in Louisiana. This transformative approach to eldercare builds on Poydras Home's legacy of excellence and gives students unique opportunities to engage with elders.
Service learning students will assist with meaningful engagement: one-on-one conversations or group activities to enhance our elders' quality of life. Students will have the opportunity to help create Life Story Books for elders and to work with individuals who have a variety of interests and abilities. Some students may choose to create enrichment packets on different subjects & historical figures to help elders engage in Lifelong Learning in addition to their in-person interactions. You will make a difference in the lives of our elders!
Some additional ideas: Play card or board games, help elders with small household chores in the Green house home, help with baking club, assist elders with modified chair exercises, shadow during PT/OT services, help during social events and parties, help with art projects and music programs.
Students will learn about the biological & psychosocial changes common in older adults and how to assist elders to adapt to their changing abilities. They will gain insight about the unique perspectives of older adults, the impact of loneliness on their health outcomes and about topics researched to enhance conversation/ create enrichment packets. Students may also learn techniques for engaging with elders living with dementia or other challenges to enable autonomy and creativity.
