Café con Ingles is an outreach ministry of St. Anthony of Padua Church Parish and the Jesuit Social Research Institute (JSRI) at Loyola University New Orleans. The goals of Café con Ingles are to teach English to the adult immigrant members of St. Anthony of Padua Church and to build a community of faith and friendship at the parish. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes meet for approximately 2 hrs in the parish’s school cafeteria after the conclusion of the 9:00 AM Spanish-language mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Before class begins, students and volunteer teachers enjoy coffee, pastries, and conversation.
Loyola service learning students will work with English language learners in small groups to help them develop the language skills to use English effectively to meet their needs and achieve their goals.
Loyola students will learn about the lives of their ESL students, including the challenges new immigrants face in their daily lives, how they spend their leisure time, and some of the customs and traditions in their home countries. Loyola students will also gain a basic understanding of the methods and strategies for teaching English to non-English speakers.
Service Learning students must complete the Interview process and complete the mandatory Training and Orientation sessions.
