CBFWS Employer Expectations
The goal of the CBFWS program is to match Loyola students receiving federal financial aid assistance with part-time jobs in community-based organizations serving the public interest. CBFWS jobs should help develop students’ career and academic interests and increase their commitment to participating in positive social change. The following federal rules govern all CBFWS programs:
- CBFWS student employees may not displace paid employees.
- Under no circumstances will an agency engage any CBFWS student employees in any political activity or work on behalf of any political party or candidate.
- Agencies will not accept any voluntary services from any CBFWS student employee and that all CBFWS student employees will be paid for all hours worked;
- Under no circumstances will agency involve CBFWS student employees in the construction, operation or maintenance of any facility used for sectarian instruction or as a place of worship or in tasks directly related to religious worship;
- Agencies will not deny employment under this agreement because of race, color, religion, national origin, disability, gender or sexual orientation, and that agency will comply with all provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (P.L. 88-352);
- Agencies will not require any CBFWS student employee to pay out of pocket for any tests, certifications, trainings or criminal background checks;
- Agency’s employment of CBFWS students will adhere to all relevant federal statutes governing Federal Work Study (Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, Title IV, Part C; 42 U.S.C. 2751-2756b) and regulations 34 CFR 673 and 34 CFR 675.
- CBFWS student employees are not eligible for paid vacation, but may receive unpaid leave during university breaks with agency’s agreement.
- Paid time for CBFWS student employees can include transportation to and from the work site, within a predetermined allowance. Loyola will set transportation allowances for each work site based on student employees' mode of transportation.
- CBFWS student employees are not eligible for overtime and may not work more than 40 hours per week.
In addition to these federal rules, Loyola expects the following:
- Handshake is Loyola University New Orleans Career Development Center's online career management system and recruiting portal.
- Employers will generally schedule CBFWS employees for no more than 26 hours of paid work per week while class is in session, or up to 40 hours per week during university breaks, holidays, and summer by mutual agreement.
- Employers will provide necessary training and orientation to CBFWS student employees, and will assign each employee appropriate and meaningful tasks.
- Employers must ensure that accurate time records are kept for all CBFWS student employees and designate a staff supervisor to verify student employees’ timesheets, sign them, and ensure that they are returned to Loyola according to its payroll schedule.
- Employers must submit both a mid-year and a final performance evaluation for each individual CBFWS student employee placed at the agency prior to the stated evaluation deadline and designate staff supervisors to review performance in person with CBFWS student employees twice per year.
- Employers must monitor CBFWS student employees’ work hours to ensure they do not exceed the amount of their financial award. CBFWS employees will be paid by Loyola ONLY up to the limit of each student employee’s CBFWS financial award. Any overages will be charged directly to the employer. Employers assume financially liability for these overages.
