The Aden Program at St. Charles Presbyterian Church offers social engagement and activities for seniors with memory and cognitive impairments (dementia, Alzheimer’s, etc.) on Tuesdays and Thursday from 10am to 2pm. Activities include: music, games, chair exercises, guest speakers, lunch, and porch sittin’. During this time care givers are provided with a period of respite self care while their loved ones are at Aden.
Service learning students will help participate in the program's games, activities, and meals, as well as one-on-one engagement with our participants. Opportunities for leadership are available for students who wish to take initiative in planning and leading activities that are appropriate for the age and cognitive abilities, as well as interests, of our participants.
Loyola students will learn how to interact and connect with seniors and those with different cognitive abilities, as well as their caregivers, in a compassionate, empathic, and professional manner. You will learn about what goes in to planning an adult care program, and understanding how our activities are designed to meet the mental, physical, emotional, and social needs of our participants. Students who are interested in working with the older adult population and those with impaired cognitive abilities will see firsthand the outward symptoms and manifestations of conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, Lewy Body dementia, encephalitis, etc.
